The Metaphorical Pattern Matching Mind
In studying Human Givens psychotherapy, which was revelatory in many respects, I learned the full honorific title for the mind. "The Metaphorical Pattern Matching Mind ". We have a mind that learns through the recognition of objective patterns. These patterns are either perceived as being separate objects or as consciousness. They are recognised as consciousness once consciousness has recognised itself, and all apparent objects are consciousness and only appear as separate objects by virtue of a mind without this recognition. This is not to say that this appearance of objects by the mind does not follow specific natural laws and order and is simply a figment of the imagination. No, the causal order the mind perceives in the form of the Universe is real to the mind, and this principle is immutable. If one thought it was a figment of the imagination, one would soon find out it was not. However, this causal order perceived by the mind is not the absolute reality of existence which is causeless.
If we invest our sense of reality in only what the mind perceives, we will automatically experience reality separated into time, space, and materialism. If we invest our sense of reality in the pure experience of Awareness beyond the mind, then we appercieve everything as immediately indivisible, ever-present, never-changing, conscious reality. We appercieve only eternity and infinity instead of time and space. As we understand ourselves to be everything, there is nothing missing, nothing out of place or lacking, no external threat or evidence of mortality. Thus, the root of psychological existential fear is removed, which is the root of all fears. Then, we can shine our existence's natural peace and life-affirming qualities free of fear. We can embrace the wounds of our psyche and let them dissolve naturally. We can see other people are ourselves and never lose that sense of rapport with all living beings, even when they disagree with us. Here, we can make a concession to perceiving time and space out of respect to the order the mind perceives and that consciousness has formed, but not make the mistake of identifying ourselves as that causal order. We can "play" the game of the order whilst remembering it is not the absolute reality. We remember we are the dreamer and don’t get lost in the dream.
If, on the other hand, we choose to believe that the causal reality perceived by the mind is the only real reality, then we will unconsciously have to accept the belief that we are but a mortal fragment of reality and live with the psychological consequences of that. These may not show up until critical moments but will have an underlying influence on all our activity. Do we desire to believe in the metaphors of the mind, or do we desire to glimpse through those metaphors to the absolute reality of Awareness from where we can perceive the metaphorical reality of the mind as it really is: infinite consciousness that is neither a subject nor object but one? There is no right or wrong? The choice is ours, and there is no right or wrong.
